about

In 2001, I made up a list of 45 song titles and proceeded to write lyrics as quickly as possible for them, dubbing them "intentionally bad songs," due to the forced, easy rhymes in each line and the absurd, puerile or generally questionable subject matter. I made music for 31 of them in about a month's time during summer vacation after junior year, picked 17 songs for The Johnny American Concept Album, and wrote "Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Kid," while riding my bike. In December 2001, I recorded music for most of the remaining songs, and two years later, sequenced many of the outtakes into this album, making The Johnny American Concept Album into a sort of double album after the fact. "Robot Child" was not a JACA song but fit the general theme and was made during the same summer.

Spencer Owen provides the drum loops on "Robot Child."
